Absences - Student Attendance Policy

Please note that absences must be excused per the instructions below, and accumulated unexcused absences can result in action by the Superintendent. For more information see Fire Island School Board Policy 7110 - Comprehensive Student Attendance Policy, available by clicking here.

Student Absences, Tardiness’, or Early Departures (ATEDs) must be followed with a note from a parent or guardian indicating the reason for the absence, within three days.

ATEDs are considered excused if they fall into the following categories:

  • Personal illness
  • Illness or death in the family
  • Impassable roads
  • Transportation delays
  • Religious observances
  • Quarantine
  • Required court appearances
  • Attendance at health clinics
  • Approved cooperative work programs
  • School related instruction/activities
  • Military obligations
  • Other such reasons as may be approved by the Superintendent

An absence without a note, or for a reason other than listed above will be considered unexcused.

Unexcused absences amounting to greater than 15% of the school attendance days in a month will generate a notice to the parent(s) or guardian(s) from the Superintendent, at which time the student and family may be referred to the appropriate school or community support service or agency to address the problem.
