The students in Ms. McNulty’s first and second grade class joined forces with Ms. Flaumenhaft’s third and fourth grade class to try to save Fred – a gummy worm stuck on top of his capsized boat. His gummy life preserver is under the boat.

The students tried to turn the boat over, get the life preserver back on Fred, and get Fred back into the boat without using their hands. To increase the challenge, the students were limited in the tools they could use to save Fred.

The problem-solving activity required students to discuss ideas, collaborate on action plans and persevere through challenges and frustration, real world skills that will serve them well into the future.
