Egg Drop

Ten students in the Woodhull School had their creativity put to the test, as teacher Karen McNulty challenged them to use their knowledge of scientific principles and design a container that would prevent an egg from breaking during a ten-foot drop. With the help of the district’s custodial staff, the eggs were encased in their containers and dropped from the roof of the school to the ground below. The audience waited with bated breath to see whether the eggs would remain intact. Designs varied from balloons to boxes to pipe cleaners, with eight of the ten eggs remaining unbroken!

“The students concluded that the greater the amount of cushioning and the lighter the packaging, the more likely the egg would remain intact,” remarked Ms. McNulty.
